ESCAPE FROM DESTRUCTION.
.
EPISODE 1.
.
One cold morning, with nothing to do at home, I decided to go for a walk and window-shop.
Am Vincent, 22 years of age and I was reading Economics in the University of Jos and was home on holidays. The holiday was a little boring because I always found myself alone at home when Daddy and Mummy had gone to work, and my junior ones to school. As I wasn't very keen on making friends, I had no one to keep me company. I've learnt long ago that friends bring no good. Only one in a million friends brings good and I wasn't prepared to take the slim chance of finding a good friend. So that morning, I locked up the house and went for a walk.
.
Just as I was beginning to enjoy my walk, the sun crept out high in the sky and was soon burning with a fierce intensity. I had not anticipated the sun because I would have preferred to stay in the air-conditioned coolness of our house and play romance with loneliness or better still watch some films. Something in her voice restrained me from doing so. Her voice, though dried and dull, sounded polite and educated. The pain on her face stirred a great emotion of pity in me. I felt like comforting her but shuddered inwardly. The stranger before me was too dirty and haggard and I didn't want to dirty myself.
'Good afternoon; I replied.
'Food please; the girl muttered and collapsed without warning.
'I'll be back; I said and jumped to my feet. I dashed off to a nearby store and came back three minutes later with a big loaf of bread, a bottle of soft drink and a bottle of Swan water. I placed them before the girl, who was still sprawling helplessly on the ground. She began to eat and swallowed everything in no time.
'Thank you', she said when she had finished eating.
'I am glad to be of help', I replied. 'Are you in some sort of trouble?' I asked cautiously. My instinct kept telling me that she was no nut from any mental home.
'Because you have shown me much kindness I feel safe to tell you my story; she said and clasped her hands in her laps. I kept quiet and waited for her to continue and she began...
